DAP - DYSLEXIA ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL

DAP a computerized assessment tool to identify preschool and primary school age children who are or may be at risk of dyslexia.

Duration: 11.2019 - 08.2022 / Partnership: Latvia / Bulgaria / Romania / Turkey / Germany.
One of the largest groups of children with specific learning difficulties are children with dyslexia.
Research shows that the only appropriate solution for dyslexia is continuous and long-lasting intervention.
The earlier the problem is identified and the earlier intervention is started, the greater the likelihood of achieving positive results.

The DAP project aims to develop a set of assessment tools to identify preschool-aged children at risk of dyslexia and students
who are already having difficulty reading, writing, and learning. It will be based on the partners' research during the preparatory phase,
the comparative situation analysis and the scientific justification report that will justify the structure and content of the newly developed assessment tool.

A computerized version of the protocol has also been developed.
The tablet-sized app is available for Windows and Android in all partner languages (Latvian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Romanian and German) and in English.
The computer-based tests for the children can either be done by the children themselves (touch screen) - in which case they could also be used as an exercise tool;
or with the help of a trainer/teacher (as an assessment tool).
- The results of all other tests (paper-based, interviews, etc.) can be entered manually by the coach/teacher.
- The app saves all tests individually for each child.
- The app displays all test results.

Individual notes/remarks/recommendations can be added by the teacher/trainer.
- All results of a child's protocol can be exported (Excel) or printed.
- A "timestamp" is added, so if a child does the same protocol a year later, the app can compare results and show progress.
The DAP APP is also supported by a comprehensive, explanatory practice book in all partner languages and in English.

For a visually impaired (vi) person language learning is the main road towards effective communication,
social inclusion and job opportunity. The present economic trend shows that the German economy is in a
growing phase, and German tourists are still world-wide leaders in traveling abroad. Consequently,
job opportunities in all fields based on verbal communication are a crucial factor in view of implementing
social integration and job opportunities for vi people in Europe.

Unfortunately, mainstream publishers do not take blind and vi students into account when developing
teaching material.
Since paper-based text books are not accessible, computer-based teaching material designed for
vi students provides real chances of learning in general and also of learning a foreign language.

In this context, mobile devices like smartphones and tablet computers can offer new ways of language
learning. These devices are not only attractive to younger people
(and could thus encourage language learning), they also offer accessibility features for vi people.
However, existing language learning apps on these devices are not
accessible. At the same time, these apps make no use of the communicative potential that these devices offer.

The project MoLLVIS therefore plans to create German language learning apps for Windows, Apple and
Android devices based on the results of the European projects ALLVIP, ELLVIS and VET4VIP that created
computer-based language courses for vi learners.


As a result the existing ALLVIP, ELLVIS and VET4VIP courses can be used on several (mobile) devices and operating systems.
As special education has to provide individual learning routes for students due to differences in the way blind and partially sighted study material, this system
of flexible use of teaching content will have a considerable impact. As the user-interface is designed to be also attractive to sighted learners, the impact goes
beyond the group of vi students and will reach a wide audience.

ALLVIP

The Socrates Project "Accessible Language Learning" offers new ways of language learning for blind and visually impaired people.

The combination of force feedback devices and 3D-Sound navigation offers an alternative user interface for self-learning software that does not require
a screenreader and provides true interactivity with the PC.

This technology is then used for a language course "English for German learners" and "German for English learners" that concentrates on communicative
listening and speaking skills.

The project Allvip was awarded with the Innovation Award of the German Mid-Size-Companies Initiative for innovative e-learning products in 2012.
The English training modules developed by the Vet4Vip project are advanced versions of the technology used by the Allvip project.

ELLVIS intends to improve the access of visually impaired persons to language learning. As good learning material for visually impaired children is rare,
it is essential to create innovative material which opens up new possibilities for this target group and makes it possible for VI children to take part in lifelong learning.
